I have been switching between Claude Code and Cursor for the last two weeks on the same repository. Same tasks, same branches, same review standards. This is not a "which tool is better" review because neither one is better. They are different tools built on different philosophies, and which one you should use depends on what you are trying to get done.
Let me start with the punchline and then earn it. If you want an AI teammate that goes off and finishes whole tasks while you do something else, Claude Code wins. If you want a tighter feedback loop inside a familiar IDE where the AI never moves without your approval, Cursor wins. Most serious developers I know end up using both for different jobs.
#The real difference in one sentence
Claude Code is an agent with an editor option. Cursor is an editor with an agent option.
That is the whole thing. Every other difference flows from that starting point. When you open Claude Code, you start with a prompt and the AI drives. When you open Cursor, you start with code in an editor and the AI assists. Both can do the other thing, but each tool was built from a different end, and it shows.
#Pricing in April 2026
Before I get into workflow differences, here is the money breakdown. Both tools updated their pricing in late 2025, so older comparison articles will mislead you.

Prices line up almost exactly at the entry and top tiers. What you are paying for differs.
Claude Pro gives you Claude Code with a usage allowance. The allowance refills on a rolling five-hour window, and you get access to Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6 but nothing else. When you pay Claude $20, you are paying for Anthropic's best coding models and the Claude Code agent runtime.
Cursor Pro gives you a monthly credit pool equal to the plan price and lets you spend those credits on any model Cursor supports, including Claude, GPT, and Gemini. When you pay Cursor $20, you are paying for a polished editor and the flexibility to pick which model to spend your credits on.
The practical implication: if you know you want to use Claude models exclusively, Claude Code gives you more Claude per dollar. If you like switching models mid-task to compare outputs, Cursor is the only option that lets you do that natively.
#Context window: same number, different reality
Both tools advertise 200,000 tokens of context. In practice they behave differently.
Cursor defaults to "regular mode" which supports up to 200K tokens, and has a separate "Max Mode" that can go up to 1 million tokens on models that support it like Gemini 2.5 Pro and GPT-4.1. Max Mode costs more credits and has to be manually enabled. Multiple developers on the Cursor forum report that the effective context on default mode is closer to 70K to 120K after internal truncation, though Cursor has not officially confirmed those numbers.
Claude Code delivers the full 200K token context reliably on Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.6, and it has a 1 million token beta on Opus 4.6 ("Claude Mythos Preview") available at standard pricing. Anthropic specifically notes that prompt caching and batch processing discounts apply across the full 1M context at standard rates.
What this means in practice: if you are working on a task where the AI needs to see 300 files at once to understand your codebase, Claude Code handles that better on Opus 4.6. If you are working on focused tasks inside a single module, Cursor's 200K feels identical.
#Where Claude Code wins
I ran Claude Code on two tasks from my team's real backlog: a dependency migration from an older logging library, and a multi-file refactor to extract a shared config module. Both tasks involved changes across 15 to 30 files.
Claude Code handled both end to end. I typed one prompt describing what I wanted, it planned the changes, asked for permission to edit files, and came back 12 minutes later with a working branch. The migration task hit one test failure, Claude Code noticed it, fixed the failing mock, reran the tests, and continued. I did not touch the keyboard for the entire 12 minutes.
This is the mode Claude Code was built for. The CLI-first design, the permission model that batches file edits, the way /cost streams token usage in real time, the background agent architecture, all of it assumes you are going to describe a task and then walk away for a while. The official docs call this "agent teams" and note that teams spawn multiple Claude Code instances that work on different parts of a task simultaneously.
Cursor can do this too. Cursor's agent mode is strong and improving. But the feedback loop is tighter, the UI assumes you are reading every diff as it happens, and the agent tends to check in with you more often. If your intent is "go finish this feature, I will be back in 20 minutes," Claude Code is more comfortable in its own skin.
#Where Cursor wins
I also ran Cursor on tasks from the same backlog. Specifically: a UI bug in a React component I had not touched in four months, and a new API endpoint that needed to match a JSON contract I was iterating on with a product manager on Slack.
Cursor was noticeably better on both. Not because its model was smarter but because its workflow matched the task. For the UI bug, I opened the file, scrolled to the component, and used Cmd+K to ask for a targeted edit inside that specific function. I saw the diff inline, approved it, and kept scrolling. Claude Code would have done this too but would have asked to read three neighboring files first and I would have had to approve each read.
For the API endpoint, I was moving fast and iterating on the contract. I wanted line-by-line autocomplete as I typed, not a 12-minute agent run. Cursor's tab-complete on frontier models is genuinely excellent, and nothing in Claude Code's design matches it because Claude Code was not built for that mode.
The other thing I kept reaching for was Cursor's model switching. When I thought Claude Sonnet was being too cautious on the API design, I pressed a key, switched to GPT-5.4, got a different take, and decided between them. Claude Code is exclusively Anthropic, so if I want a second opinion I have to leave the tool.

#Cost comparison for realistic workloads
I tracked my own usage across a week of identical work on both tools and mapped it onto the plans I would need to cover that usage.
At the cheap end, both tools cost the same. At the heavy-use end, both tools cost the same. The middle is where the pricing models diverge. If you are a medium-intensity user who switches models often, Cursor Pro+ at $60 a month gives you flexibility that Claude Max 5x at $100 a month does not. If you are a medium-intensity user who wants more Claude-specific capacity, Claude Max 5x is the better deal.
#Which one should you use
I built a decision tree that matches how I actually recommend between these two tools.
Pick Claude Code if you:
- Want an AI that finishes multi-file tasks end to end
- Work often in the terminal or via CI/CD
- Are building automations that run Claude on a schedule
- Want the largest reliable context window (especially Opus 4.6 1M beta)
- Prefer Anthropic's models and do not want to switch
Pick Cursor if you:
- Want tight inline feedback inside a polished editor
- Need to compare outputs from different models mid-task
- Do most of your work in focused single-file or single-component edits
- Want strong tab completion as a daily driver
- Like visual diff UIs more than terminal output
Pick both if you:
- Can afford $40 a month total
- Do a mix of agent-style task completion and focused editing work
- Want to run experiments across different model families
I am in the last group. Claude Code handles refactors, migrations, and any task where I can write a clear spec and walk away. Cursor handles UI work, iterative design-to-code work, and anything where I want to see the code change as I think about it. The $40 a month is worth more to me than either tool alone would be.
